South Asia 2000

On March 30, 3000, my son Greg Kempster (age 28), and I, Karen Gaia Pitts, travelled from our respective homes in Portland Oregon and Sacramento California, to South Asia. We arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, and from there, proceeded with our adventure. The objectives of my trip were:

  1. To travel to Nagpur India and visit with a correspondent in family planning, Arun Dolke. Arun had arranged for me a wonderful tour of the area surrounding Nagpur, of villages in rural areas where development and family planning programs were to be observed.
  2. To go trekking in Nepal to the Annupurna Sanctuary area and to Annapurna base camp
  3. To help somehow with family planning and/or development in the rural areas that I would be visiting in Nepal, and to visit USAID in Kathmandu to see about handing out vitamins and condoms on my trek.
  4. To help Tibetan refugees and monks with computer literacy and internet.
  5. To make arrangements with the Bangladesh Center for Communications Programs in Dhaka to produce 400 umbrellas similar to the Green Umbrellas that were used in the successful family planning/reproductive health campaign under the sponsorship of the government of Bangladesh.
